QAFCO, located in Mesaieed Industrial City, is the world’s largest single site producer of urea. The company was founded in 1969 and is owned by Industries Qatar (70 percent owned by Qatar Petroleum), 75 percent and Yara International, 25 percent.
QAFCO started production from its first plant (QAFCO 1) in 1973 with a nominal capacity of 900 tons of Ammonia and 1000 tons of Urea daily.
Presently QAFCO complex comprises four completely integrated trains; QAFCO 1 (1973), QAFCO 2 (1979), QAFCO 3 (1997) and QAFCO 4 (2004). Each train is made up of two units, one for production of ammonia and the other for urea, with a total production of 6,150 tons of Ammonia and 8,700 tons of urea daily.
As part of the QAFCO-4 project, a Urea Formaldehyde Plant (UFC-85) has been built with a production capacity of approximately 28,000 tons of UFC85 per annum. The plant is integrated with the various units and production facilities of QAFCO.
QAFCO is planning a future expansion (QAFCO-5). When operational, QAFCO-5 will add around 4,400 tons per day of ammonia and 3,500 t/d of urea to QAFCO’s production capacity.
