Subsidiaries, Joint Ventures and Other Investments

The operations and activities of Qatar Petroleum are conducted at various onshore and offshore locations. In addition, QP carries out activities through the following subsidiaries, joint ventures and other investments (all information correct as of October 2009).

Industries Qatar

Industries Qatar was incorporated in 2003, as part of a reorganization program. Today it is one of Qatar’s biggest companies, employing more than 3,000 people.

IQ’s operations span from the metals industry to petrochemicals. The group operates a number of production facilities in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The IQ group companies are:

  • QAPCO - established in 1974 as a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (80%) and Total Petrochemicals (20%). Qatar Petroleum’s shares in QAPCO were taken over by Industries Qatar in 2003
  • QAFCO - established in 1969 and incorporated in 1975 in a joint venture agreement between the Qatar government and two foreign shareholders. In the same year, the Government transferred its shares to Qatar Petroleum
  • Qatar Steel - incorporated in 1974 as a joint venture between the Qatar government [70%] and two Japanese companies, Kobe Steel [20%] and Tokyo Boeki [10%], to establish an integrated steel plant
  • QAFAC - incorporated in 1991 as a joint venture for the construction and operation of a methanol and MTBE production facility

Pre-2003, Qatar Petroleum had an interest in all of these group companies, with the exception of Qatar Steel, which was state-controlled. In April 2003, QP assumed control of Qatar Steel, transferring its interests, and those in QAPCO, QAFCO and QAFAC, to the recently-formed Industries Qatar. After an Initial Public Offering later that year, IQ was successfully listed on the Doha Securities Market.
