Applications of Linear Alkyl Benzene Based Surfactants
1. Household Detergents
One of the largest applications of detergents is for cleaning clothing. The formulations are complex, reflecting the diverse demands of the application and the highly competitive consumer market. In general, laundry detergents contain water softeners, surfactants, bleach, enzymes, brighteners, fragrances, and many other agents. The formulation varies from country to country.
2. Industrial Detergents
Cleaning agents are substances, usually liquids, that are used to remove dirt, including dust, stains, bad smells, and clutter on surfaces. Purposes of cleaning agents include health, beauty, absence of offensive odor, avoidance of spreading of dirt and contaminants, kill bacteria and clean at the same time.
All-purpose cleaners are usually concentrated solutions of surfactants and water softeners, which enhance the behavior of surfactant in hard water. Typical surfactants are alkyl benzene sulfonates, an anionic detergent, and modified fatty alcohols.
For ferrous metals, the cleaners contain chelating agent and abrasives and surfactants.
Scouring agents are mixtures of the usual cleaning chemicials (surfactants, water softners) as well as abrasive powders.
3. Dishwashing liquid
As dish washing liquid,detergents are used to assist in dishwashing. It is usually a highly-foaming mixture of surfactants with low skin irritation, and is primarily used for hand washing of glasses, plates, cutlery and cooking utensils in a sink or bowl.
The reduced surface tension of dishwashing water, and increasing solubility of modern surfactant mixtures, allows the water to run off the dishes in a dish rack very quickly.
4. Agrochemicals, like Pesticides/Herbicides:
The surfactant blends improve as adjuvant for dispersing, wetting and spreading characteristics of the herbicide spray solutions enhancing the dynamic and equilibrium surface tension values and assist the efficiency of dispersing the herbicides.
5. Emulsion Polymerization
As surfactant, they are useful in emulsion polymerization for paints, plasticizers and rubbers.
6. Wetting agents for Textiles:
They are non-foaming wetting agent for continuous or discontinuous dyeing processes which are highly effective for textile finishing, de-aerating effects, prevents fabric floating, resistant to hard water and electrolytes, reduces the tendency of migration with finishing agents, especially in resin finishing.
